Nelson Bays Primary Health provides an adult Infectious Diseases Service for the Nelson Marlborough region (Te Tau Ihu). This service works closely with Te Whatu Ora Public Health Service to provide an important service to our community.

The Infectious Diseases team can be involved with an infection involving any area in the body, as well as infections that can be spread person to person.

This service will help with:

  • Consultation and advice for patients in the Nelson Marlborough region, both in the community and at Nelson or Wairau Hospital

  • Supporting patients with chronic infections

  • Education for community and hospital-based health professionals

  • Provision of guidelines around the treatment of common infections in conjunction with Community Health Pathways and hospital antimicrobial guidance

  • Assisting health professionals with appropriate antimicrobial use to help reduce antimicrobial resistance (“antimicrobial stewardship”)

  • Supporting the infection, prevention, and control team at Nelson and Wairua Hospital

  • Development of local COVID-19 guidelines and advice on improving areas for assessing and treating patients with COVID-19

To access the service, you will be referred by your general practice (family doctor), or by the doctors caring for you in hospital.
