Listening to Whānau. Acting on What Matters.
Nelson Bays Primary Health acknowledges the release of Whānau Voice 2.0 – Te reo hauora o ngā whānau i Te Tauihu o te Waka-a-Māui, a significant report from Te Kāhui Hauora o Te Tauihu Iwi Māori Partnership Board that captures the experiences, aspirations and priorities of 584 whānau Māori across Te Tauihu
The report draws on more than 800 pieces of kōrero gathered through iwi-led engagement and a region-wide survey, providing one of the strongest regional evidence bases developed to date on hauora Māori in Te Tauihu.
The findings amplify themes that are familiar across primary care: the importance of timely access to services, trusted relationships, culturally safe care, clearer navigation of the health system, and support before health issues reach crisis point. Whānau also highlighted the critical role kaupapa Māori providers play in improving outcomes and creating environments where people feel heard, respected and supported.
As a primary health organisation, NBPH supports the report's call for a more connected health system that works around the realities of people's lives, rather than expecting whānau to navigate complex and fragmented services themselves
The report's whakaaro that"equity may not always be experienced as receiving more, but as being left to carry less" reflects a powerful challenge for everyone involved in healthcare planning and delivery.
We thank the whānau who shared their experiences and acknowledge the work of Te Kāhui Hauora in bringing these voices forward. The findings provide valuable direction for health organisations, funders and decision-makers as we work together to improve hauora across Te Tauihu.
