Traumatic Brain Injury in Family Violence - An intergenerational and life span perspective
Wed, 13 May, 9:30am - 4:30pm
The Headingly Centre
Richmond, New Zealand
This workshop provides a comprehensive, trauma-informed exploration of Traumatic Brain Injury/Acquired Brain Injury (TBI/ABI) within the context of family violence in Aotearoa New Zealand. Drawing on contemporary research, lived experience, and front-line practice, the workshop examines how repeated violence, concussive and sub-concussive brain injury, strangulation, and chronic stress exposure, impacts across the lifespan. Participants will develop a critical understanding of family violence as a patterned, coercive, and inter-generational issue, rather than a series of isolated incidents. The workshop situates Family Violence and TBI/ABI within historical, legislative, and socio-cultural contexts, highlighting the disproportionate impact on wāhine, tamariki, and whānau Māori, and concludes with a critical reflection on current systems and responses and considers what trauma-and-brain-informed practice requires moving forward.
